Bansilalpet Stepwell (Naganah Kunta, Bansilalpet)

Objective: The need to safeguard and conserve our traditional water conservation practices is of utmost importance for sustainability. Rampant urbanization in our cities has mismanaged water source sustainability. Our predecessors evinced far more forethought than we do today. We have relegated water and its source to just a commodity; to be used as and when we require, with a twist of the tap. We have erased our respect for this precious resource with a consumerist attitude. It is vital to establish this connection to provide sustainable solutions towards providing water security for future generations.

The story of water is essentially the story of culture, religion, gender, geology, geography, public health, nature, even geopolitics. When we stop treating water as an invisible, unending resource and accept its transience caused by the current trend of misuse, and rectify our indiscretions, we can work towards water sustainability.

Recovered and Protected Stepwell

Besides being relics of history, step-wells play an important role in recharging groundwater and still hold significance in the present-day context. It is of utmost importance to bring to light their forgotten significance and restore them. Stepwells can work towards creating local water security and preventing urban floods. We have to go beyond tap and tanker and ensure water source sustainability. This, in essence, is the project purpose of the Bansilalpet Stepwell restoration. The Rainwater Project aims to restore the historical stepwell and the precinct, revive the groundwater levels, improve water security in the area, and reconnect the community with the stepwell by reinventing it as a public space.
